Zen is a live practice to address the needs of our time. Zen teaches long-proven methods, and yet it does not aim to reproduce forms that have been appropriate in different times or cultures. Instead, Zen adapts and meets the needs of the world today.
Our practice at Tech Community Zen integrates silent Zen sitting practice alongside koan practice. Our sources include Korean Zen and Japanese Zen along with modern and classic Buddhist teachings. For more information, see our Schedule, or the page About Zen.
The guiding teacher of the Tech Community Zen Center is Chris Chapman, PhD.
Zen: Chris began Zen practice in 2001 and ordained as a dharma teacher in 2015. In 2023, he received Inka (authorization as a guiding teacher, aka "JDPSN") from Zen Master Anita Feng (Jeong Ji) in the Golden Wind Zen Order. Chris previously served as Head Dharma Teacher at the Blue Heron Zen Community in Seattle.
Tech: Following studies in psychology (Master's, PhD) and philosophy (Master's), and working as a clinical psychologist, Chris began a research career in Tech in 2000. After 24 years at Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, Chris now leads a tech industry educational association and teaches Zen.
Teaching: As a Zen teacher, Chris's goal for everyone is compassion and awareness: Wherever you are, right now, wake up!
A Zen lineage is a sequence of Zen teachers, who each authorized their successors, going back to the historical Buddha.
Tech Community Zen continues the lineage of Zen Master (ZM) Seung Sahn, who brought Korean Zen to the world. Korean Zen holistically encompasses foundations that later developed into the schools of Soto Zen and Rinzai Zen.
Our lineage traces through ZM Jeong Ji Anita Feng who gave teaching authorization ("Inka") to our teacher in the lineage of the Golden Wind Zen Order. The Golden Wind order was founded by ZM Ji Bong Robert Moore, dharma heir of ZM Seung Sahn, with affiliated centers in Seattle, Albuquerque, Long Beach, and Vashon, Washington. Its centers practice in Korean and Japanese Rinzai styles, reflecting the harmony of different traditions as Zen adapts to today's needs.
Historically, a few of the women and men in our Zen lineage are Anita Feng, Ji Bong, Seung Sahn, Kyongho, Taego, Miaoxin Daiosho, Linchi, Paichang, Hui Neng, Bodhidharma, Prajnatara, Yasodhara, Mahapajapati, and the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama. We value the lineages of other Zen traditions, including the Kwan Um School of Zen, the Chogye order in Korea, Soto and Rinzai schools in Japan and the West, and the history of women and nonbinary ancestors.
Our complete Zen lineage is listed here (PDF).
